Session ”Decarbonising Chemical Supply Chains with the TfS PCF Guideline” at 2023 CHPI Conference

Dr.-Ing. Mathias Lemke, Senior Director and Head of Sourcing Raw & Packaging Material, Digital Health & Devices at Merck, will address the topic of “Decarbonising Chemical Supply chains with the TfS Product Carbon Footprint Guideline” at the 2023 CPHI Conference in Barcelona. The session that is part of the track “Creating a Circular Economy” is scheduled for 24 October at 14:40-15:00 CET in room 4.4 of Conference Centre 4.

Abstract of the presentation

Merck has set a science-based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In order to achieve this, the company has launched a Supplier Decarbonisation Programme to lower emissions along its supply chain. To accurately track progress, it’s important to have transparency regarding emissions associated with the products Merck purchases. This can be achieved by collecting product carbon footprints (PCF) from suppliers, which can help companies demonstrate reductions in their emissions profile.

Although many companies have started evaluating their greenhouse gas emissions, only a few have reached the stage of routinely calculating Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) based on standardised methodologies. Addressing this issue, the PCF Guideline, developed by Together for Sustainability, provides tailored instructions for calculating PCFs in compliance with existing guidelines such as ISO or GHG protocol. By facilitating the exchange of harmonised and reliable data, this collaborative publication helps corporations to reduce GHG emissions effectively.
